Yuga Labs, the parent company of Bored Ape Yacht Club, has launched its Second Trip for its Otherside universe, an experience in the “metaverse”. Yuga Labs and partner Improbable incorporated several thousands of simultaneous users, who interacted in real-time. The event was an improvement on the First Trip last summer, which had the capacity to hold 4,500 people. Yuga Labs invited holders of its non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for the Bored Ape Yacht Club to participate in the event. As one of the financial powers behind metaverse development, Yuga Labs has the resources to compete. Yuga Labs raised $450m in March 2022, and initially sold 55,000 Otherdeed NFTs for virtual land ownership, generating around $320m in primary sales. The Otherdeed NFTs have generated secondary sales of more than 500,000 ETH, or above $800m. The Second Trip builds on last summer’s First Trip, which used software from tech partner Improbable to enable players to enjoy full physics effects for their characters and speak to each other in small groups using 3D audio.
