TikTok CEO faces US lawmakers’ questioning on security issues during hearing.

US lawmakers accused TikTok of serving harmful content and causing emotional distress to young users at a congressional hearing on Thursday. The Chinese-owned app was grilled on its outsized influence on teens as lawmakers questioned whether American user data could be accessed by the Chinese government, and asked how the company prevented harmful content from reaching young users. CEO Shou Zi Chew testified that while most TikTok users are over 18, the company had invested in measures to protect young people who use the app. The hearing comes as the Biden administration faces pressure to ban the app over national security concerns. TikTok has rolled out more parental control tools recently and is developing a feature to let parents block their teens from seeing videos with certain words or hashtags.
