Cyber criminals have compromised 13 Facebook accounts with a combined following of over 500,000 people to spread malware via Facebook ads, according to cyber intelligence firm CloudSEK. The attackers are exploiting the popularity of the ChatGPT service to infiltrate legitimate Facebook accounts, posing a significant risk to users’ security. CloudSEK claims to have identified at least 25 impersonating sites that are tricking people into downloading harmful software while posing as OpenAI websites. The malware is reportedly able to steal sensitive information, such as payment details, and has replication capabilities capable of spreading across networks through removable media.
