A 65-year-old Mumbai woman fell prey to a cyber scam and lost Rs. 6,91,859. She received a fake message on her husband’s phone stating that the electricity bill was overdue and the connection would be cut off if it remained unpaid. The message included a phone number, which she called, and an unknown person posing as an employee of Adani Electricity asked the victim to download the app ‘Team viewer quick support’. Subsequently, the victim received three payment messages, and a total of Rs. 6,91,859 was debited from her account.
The SBI Fraud Management team contacted the victim, who confirmed that she did not initiate the transactions. The victim filed an FIR at the Andheri Police Station, and a case was registered against the unknown person under sections 420, 66(C), and 66(D) of the IPC.
