Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel has announced new family plans in an effort to entice prepaid users to make the switch to postpaid connections. These new plans range in monthly data offerings from 105-320 GB and range in price from Rs. 599-1,499 per month. Additionally, Black family plans, which include DTH and fixed broadband service, are offered at rates between Rs. 799-2,299 per month. These new family plans incorporate the ability to bundle 2-5 mobile phone connections under a single plan. Furthermore, Airtel is offering Amazon Prime, Disney+Hotstar for one year, and Netflix for higher price plans.
The overall mobile subscriber base for Bharti Airtel in India is 332 million, with only 5.4% of those subscribers utilizing postpaid connections. However, the postpaid customer base grew 8% as of December 31, 2022, from a year prior, to 18.9 million. According to a company official, the new family plans are designed to attract prepaid customers to switch to postpaid and optimize the data limit, calls, and SMS bundled into each plan. By bundling OTT services, family prepaid users may be able to better manage their expenses, according to the official.
In Airtel’s Black Family Plans, the entry-level plan starts at Rs. 799 per month, with DTH services bundled in. The company also offers a package that includes a broadband connection with two mobile postpaid connections for Rs. 998 per month, and another plan at Rs. 2,299 per month that includes four postpaid connections with DTH and broadband service. Airtel expects the new family plans to improve average revenue per user (ARPU) from family plan subscribers. The company’s ARPU in December 2022 was Rs. 193.
The new family plans are part of Bharti Airtel’s strategy to improve and grow its postpaid business. By offering more data and bundled services, the company hopes to attract more prepaid customers to switch to postpaid and ultimately expand its subscriber base.
